Gabe Schwartzman received his PhD from the Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota. He studies energy transition, regional economic transitions, and the politics of rural economic development. His recent work has investigated the social, environmental, and political implications of the decline of the coal industry in Appalachia, where he has conducted research for over a decade. His current research examines questions of equity and political economy in the emerging carbon forestry offset regime in Central Appalachian forests. In addition, he has a research project studying forest carbon governance in Pará State, in the eastern Brazilian Amazon.
